I'm a french guy using SME server for personnal use. Here is a sum-up of my configuration :

Server is a desktop compaq EVO with Celeron @1.6 GHz + 512MB of memory + 250MB internal HD + 350 MB external USB disk for backup. Computer chosen for his price (ebay...) and his compacity.
SME server is used in gateway mode between my adsl box and a wifi-n external access point.

SME server is used for these tasks :

storing all personal datas (documents, photos, video, ... )
most important, managing automatically all backups using affa on external hard disk
windows domain server for my laptops to have data access protection and profile backup on server
exchange-like server using zarafa (so great ... )
vpn (openvpn) access from internet to access to all this stuff in a secure way, and also, I must admit, have full access to internet from work
printer server ( wireless access to printer from laptops)
scanner server ( wireless scanner access from laptops ) using sane
joomla web server with internet access for family use
